My Life

Nigel was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland.

Nigel Hammett is the son of a New York Father and a Baltimore Mother. He is the oldest of two, having a younger sister. Seeing his grandmother, aunt, and mother all own their businesses inspired young Nigel to be an entrepreneur. By age 12, Nigel had his own snowball stand business, a fence painting business, and was hustling over 50 dollars a day in candy sales in school until a classmate told on him (LOL).

Growing Up

Nigel had a few rough patches in his life. Before he left middle school, he was suspended over 6 times and threatened to be kicked out of school. As smart as he was, he would always find himself in trouble and struggled with balancing being a smart young black man when everyone wanted him to be the opposite. Nigel spent most of his time at the Edgewood Boys & Girls Club and spent his summers at his Grandmothers house. Nigel faced trama in the family starting at 15. Through these tough times, Nigel was exposed firsthand to the effects of child protective services, law enforcement, courtrooms, instability, and mental institutions; Nigel’s life would never be the same as he would have to step up and be a man.

Black Boy Fly

Nigel knew that his life was in his own hands and couldn’t let his family turmoil determine his future. To avoid his domestic issues at home Nigel began to spend his time on the basketball courts, tennis courts, library, and local boys and girls club volunteering to watch the younger kids. Nigel graduated High School with a 3.8 GPA, 2 Varsity Letters (Tennis & Basketball), and over 25 small scholarships. He was accepted into over 5 schools and had the world at his fingertips. His peers couldn’t understand why he wanted to go away. The summer before college, Nigel lost 2 childhood friends to street violence. It was then he realized he had an opportunity to “make it” and would stop at nothing to prove that someone, where he was from, could achieve anything. At age 17, Nigel left Maryland to study Industrial & Systems Engineering at North Carolina A&T where he would make the D1 Men’s Tennis Team as a true freshman.

Embrace Your Roots

He can never forget where he came from because it is engraved in his heart. He remembers those nights riding around with nowhere to sleep at night, coming into work or school tired from a long night in and out of police stations, and he will never forget all the people he met along the way. He gained an appreciation for the little things like friendship, peace of mind, and the basics like clothes, food, and a place to stay. Nigel wouldn’t trade his childhood for anything because it gave him the very tools he still uses today including mental toughness, adaptability, resourcefulness, and precision on his laser tight goals.

The Transformation

Nigel’s dad raised him and sister to always work hard, be honest, and never let obstacles stop them from success.

From his early struggles in school, in the streets, and with his family he would gain a new perspective on life and fully understand that there will always be obstacles. His father had worked over 15 different jobs in his life and was very open about the family’s financial struggles. This allowed him to have open and honest money conversations early in life. This pushed him to become more financially literate. Nigel learned how to invest in the Stock Market as a teenager and is consistently improving his financial skills.

Growing up the only thing that was valued was street credit, your basketball skills (He was on varsity but on the bench), and your ability to get a lot of girls. Since he didn’t have any 1 of those 3, he was often overlooked and no one thought he would do well. His father believed in him and told him once he left for school to never look back, so he didn’t!

To Pimp a Butterfly

Nigel came to college hungry and was eager to prove what he could do in the right situation. His worst moments as a kid help motivate him to never give up, complain, or take anything for granted. He quickly noticed many kids struggled with self-esteem, fear of rejection, and a fear of failing. He saw kids that were superstars at their High School begin to break down and crumble due to the new responsibilities, adversity, and hardships of college. Nigel was different as he was fearless in everything he did because he had already seen the bottom, all he could do was go up!

When Nigel came to North Carolina A&T he began to spread his wings. Nigel would go on to own a campus apparel business, become SGA Junior Class President, have multiple engineering internships, pledge Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and win many awards. At the age of 20, Nigel turned over a new entrepreneurial leaf. He went on to launch his own Career Service business helping 200+ people with Resumes, Cover Letters, and LinkedIn Profiles. Whether it be speaking to the youth, volunteering during the holidays, or simple donations… Nigel is a man of the people and loves to give back.

Trust Your Journey

He has traveled around the country working with some of the most influential people in the country. When Nigel comes home back to Baltimore, he is always happy to see his sister and family. At home, Nigel is constantly reminded of his struggles he endured but it has given him the keys to success. Nigel knows that every season shall pass, and change starts within! "God will won't give you anything you can't handle".
